Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients
  

For the Marinade
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sauce and Cooking
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for searing beef
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for cooking onions
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

Preparation of Marinade
  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil.
  2. Toss the beef strips in the marinade and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
Cooking Onions
  1. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized.
  3. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the pan and set aside.
Searing Beef
  1. In the same pan, heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil over high heat.
  2. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.
Making Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch.
  2. Pour the sauce over the beef and let simmer until it thickens.
Combining and Serving
  1. Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stirring to combine.
  2. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

Slice the beef against the grain for more tenderness. Ensure your pan is hot enough to sear the beef quickly for better flavor. Don't skip the marinating step, as it adds a lot of flavors to the beef. You can add colorful bell peppers or other vegetables like broccoli and snap peas for added nutrition and flavor.
