Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef Use lean ground beef to reduce grease.
  • 1 small onion, diced Can substitute with shallots for a milder flavor.
  • 2 cups marinara sauce For a different flavor, BBQ sauce or Alfredo can be used.
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese You can also use cheddar or pepper jack for variation.
  • 1 bag frozen tater tots (32 oz) Substitute with thinly sliced fresh potatoes if desired.
Optional Toppings
  • pepperoni, olives, bell pepper, green onions, mushrooms Add these during the last 5 minutes of baking.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish to prevent sticking. You can also line it with parchment paper for easier cleanup.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft (about 5-7 minutes). Make sure to break up the beef with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  4. Mix in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper in the skillet. Stir well and let it simmer for a couple of minutes.
  5. Spread the beef and sauce mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheese over the mixture.
Assembly
  1. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the cheese and beef mixture. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheese over the tater tots.
Baking
  1. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tater tots are golden and crispy.
  2. Optionally add mini pepperoni, olives, bell peppers, or any other favorite toppings during the last 5 minutes of baking.
Serving
  1. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Cut it into squares and dish it out on plates.

Notes

Experiment with different ground meats or add more veggies for a vegetarian option. For a crispier topping, bake a few extra minutes but be careful not to let it burn.
